Raslila - Liberation Through Dance
From March 9th until June 30th 2008 the Ethnographic Museum in Cracow invites you to the exhibition RASLILA: LIBERATION THROUGH DANCE.
In the exhibition you will see paintings from the collections of the Ethnographic Museum in Cracow painted using the gouache method. They represent the Hindu folk mystery Raslila dedicated to Krishna. The collection is supplemented by Hindu instruments, plus masks and crowns of Krishna and Radha.
In India dance is a form of prayer, it accompanies most of the native rituals and ceremonies. The Raslila mystery is played out within a circle, usually outdoors, and it gathers crowds of the faithful who participate actively. The characters of Krishna and his earthly paramour Radha are played exclusively by young boys. Their dance tells legends from the lives of the protagonists and also expresses the human longing for union with the divine.
The exhibition itself has an unconventional form: the viewer enters a moving, multi-dimensional space, whose meaning must be discovered personally.
From April 1st until June 30th there will also be a cycle of workshops called, "The Hindu Educational Way."

The exhibition is part of the 3rd International Festival of Dance Anthropology, "On the Silk Route of Gesture."

The exhibition features:
  • Images painted using the gouache method which come from the Rajasthan region (Collections of the Ethnographic Museum in Cracow from Krzysztof Wolski’s donation).
  • Indian drums and flutes (Collections of the Ethnographic Museum in Cracow).
  • Masks and crowns of Krishna and Radha (Collections of the Warsaw Museum of Asia and the Pacific).
  • The film recordings come from the collections of the Embassy of the Republic of India in Poland and also from private collections (Special thanks to Dr. Bożena Śliwczyńska)
